Queen Marisa of Kozan (マリサ女王様(じょおうさま) Marisa Jōō-sama?) was the founder and first monarch of the Federal Kingdom of Kozan, where she ruled from its establishment in 1702 until her death in 1752.[1] Under her leadership, she established the Federal Kingdom of Eastern Kozan as a capitalist monarchy with a free and open society. Her state built a successful relationship with Sweden which in term helped Kozan build a prosperous economy and be more open to Western ideas.[2] At the time of her death, she was the longest-reigning monarch in Kozan, and has posthumously been declared "the sweet holy queen."

Life[ | ]

Early life[ | ]

Marisa was born on July 10, 1671, in the Humanoid Village as the only child of Master Kirisame and Mima. Her mother was murdered by Vladrouge Scarlet when she was two, leaving her father to raise her on his own.

Royal activity[ | ]

Marisa proclaimed the establishment of the Federal Kingdom of Eastern Kozan in January 1702. In order to make sure the newly-established kingdom could continue to have a ruler following her death, she and King Rinnosuke had a son, the future King Kichou.

Appearance[ | ]

In her formal form prior to establishing the monarchy, Marisa is depicted with shoulder-length blonde hair with one part of it tied in a ponytail. She wears a different gown depending on the season - in the summer she wears an elegant bare-shouldered light gold gown complete with long gloves and in the winter or in very formal situations she wears an elegant short-sleeved Victorian-inspired gown with darker hues of gold along with light gold and white frills.

In an unofficial piece of artwork, Queen Marisa, in her ruling form has very long, near-floor-length blonde hair and wears a long-sleeved gown and white gloves. The royal costume worn by Marisa in that artwork also made an appearance in Chuhou Joutai 3: Three Nights of Scarlet Abscess during the introductory sequence and in Driller and Kagami's endings, worn by Crown Princess Konata.

In the Touhou Project NES Demakes, Marisa had two different depictions. In the Touhou 2: The Story of Eastern Wonderland NES Demake, Marisa was depicted with short red hair alongside a purple long-sleeved outfit. For the rest of the demakes starting with Touhou 3: The Phantasmagoria of Dimensional Dreams NES Demake, her appearance changed, with her hair now blonde and slightly longer, covering her right eye. She also wears a shorter-sleeved outfit that extends only to her elbows. It's not clear what caused her appearance to change, leading to some speculation that Marisa may have dyed her hair between the events of The Story of Eastern Wonderland and The Phantasmagoria of Dimensional Dreams.

Behind the Scenes[ | ]

  • Before the Drillimation Danmaku Universe began being merged with Touhou Project's elements, Queen Marisa was an obvious caricature of the character, as demonstrated by her hair color and appearance. To avoid legal ramifications at the time of Chuhou Joutai: The Middle State of War's development, her physical appearance in-game is altered to make her look more regal than she normally does.
