Jack "Hearthcliffe" Fawkes (ジャック・フックス Jakku Fukkusu?) is a Canadian-Kozanese believed to be the person seen in several videos produced by the Shintoist Province and Scarlet Devil of Team Crimson, showing the executions of a number of captives between 2000 and 2003. The Kozanese Royal Defense Force nicknamed him Hearthcliffe (ハースクリッフ Hāsukuriffu?) since during his childhood he was known to cause mischief.[1]

Despite being half-youkai, and like his father, he developed a hatred against youkai-borns, though there were instances where he developed this against humanoids.

Life[]

Early life[]

Hearthcliffe was born on May 25, 1988, as the only child of humanoid Frederic Sam Fawkes and youkai-born Hanayo Katsuragi. His mother died almost immediately after birth, leading to his father raising him. He resided in a middle-class neighborhood near Ahoge Peninsula, which was said to be known for its Yakuza activity.

Execution career[]

After the second incarnation of the Shintoist Province and Scarlet Devil of Team Crimson was established, Hearthcliffe was initiated as an executioner for the group. The following are reported victims of Hearthcliffe:

Hikari Uchida[]

Main article: Hikari Uchida

In a video released in March 2000, Hearthcliffe read a prepared statement criticizing Japan for its help with Kozan to crush SPASDOT. Hearthcliffe, who was shown masked, proceeded to slash Uchida to death. The National Diet of Japan confirmed the video was genuine.

Attempted killing of Susumu Takajima and Kagami Ochiai[]

Who would think you would try to catch up to the great Hearthcliffe? Greetings to ya, how are you? Good day sir, I'm always sipping tea and laughing at everything that happens!
~ Hearthcliffe, shortly after encountering Driller for the first time

In the spring of 2004, Hearthcliffe encountered two young recruits of the Kozanese Royal Defense Force named Susumu Takajima and Kagami Ochiai. He was told by Takajima that he was hunting for him with the intent of defeating him. After being chased by the duo he runs off to a nearby stronghold located at the tip of Ahoge Peninsula, where the duo later encounters him again the same day, even after using a drone to taunt them at Kozankyo's bayfront. He attempted to kill the duo in a fierce battle but was thumped by them.

Hearthcliffe encountered Takajima and Ochiai again in July 2004, first at the Hakurei Shrine by falsifying that Maika Ohtake, again at the Fantasy Island amusement park in Kourindou by claiming he organized the Koseimi raid in Kozankyo and subsequently fooling the duo into thinking Kichiro Nakasone had the Mini Hakkero when in reality he did not. He encountered the duo a third time in Gairai after Takayuki Kuno was defeated and then proceeded to fool them again with a makeshift Mini Hakkero. Hearthcliffe ultimately decided to duel them after being encountered at a SPASDOT stronghold in the town of Masa, but in the end, was ultimately defeated.

Profile[]

His interests include having fury and claiming souls to be the strongest.

Appearance[]

Hearthcliffe himself is depicted with brown hair and eyes, similar to what Susumu Takajima has. He also wears a red sweatshirt with navy blue jeans and brown shoes. He is often depicted with a grin and is approximately the same height as Susumu Takajima himself.

Speech[]

Hearthcliffe appears to speak in a form of Engrish by often saying things that are redundant or hardly make sense. To add to this, he often uses food metaphors in his sentences and derogatorily refers to Susumu Takajima or Kagami Ochiai as "fink-rats." He sometimes speaks about himself in third-person points of view, although most of the time he speaks in first-person view, such as when he says "I have fury/chortles!" In the Japanese version, Hearthcliffe often adds strings of "ru" at the end of every one of his sentences.

Strategy[]

Jack Fawkes is the midboss and boss of the seventh stage. He shoots orange-white beams, blue and green danmaku, and orange, green, blue, and pink daggers at the target, which take away 4 HP on impact. He has the ability to freeze time and place daggers. His boss fight is much more difficult in Chuhou Joutai 2: Paraided!, as he puts the daggers in the center of the screen. To avoid getting instakilled or risk having to use a bomb, do not position yourself in the center of the screen. Instead, move toward the bottom of the screen and attack Hearthcliffe from there.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Hearthcliffe's smile and somewhat broken English is a reference to the Mario & Luigi series character Fawful. This holds true for both the English and Japanese versions.
    • In the Japanese version, he appears to speak with a fake Kansai accent and ends every sentence with a trademark laugh.
  • His iconic laugh is a reference to Undertale, although it uses the original instead of the edited version. The sound actually originated from the Warner Bros. Sound Effects Library by Sound Ideas; it was first used in some Pink Panther cartoons and the PlayStation game Tomba! was the first game to use it, but Undertale was the game to popularize the sound.
  • Hearthcliffe is the only character in Chuhou Joutai: The Middle State of War to have three boss fights.
